- I've
heard greyhounds are aggressive, hyper race dogs. Do they
really make good pets?
Absolutely! These are extremely social dogs with generally
benign temperaments. They've been raised from birth around
many other dogs, and as racers, they've been handled by
people (trainers, kennel help, etc.) since puppyhood.
Not aggressive, and definitely not hyper! Remember, the
operative word here is hound.
- Can
I keep my greyhound in the backyard?
The greyhound, with it's thin coat and lack of body fat,
is an indoor dog. Just as you would be uncomfortable outside
in hot and cold weather, so would a greyhound. Though
a larger breed, they are graceful, and when you're not
at home, they're likely to sleep all day, curled up in
a soft place.
- Are
greyhounds good with children?
Yes. Most greys are great with kids. Of course, the selection
of any pet requires careful consideration, and
young children must be taught responsibility and respect
for pets.
- Can
a greyhound live with cats and other small animals?
Yes, yes! Proper introduction and socialization is necessary,
but most greyhounds readily accept other family pets.
Greyhounds LOVE company!
- Can
greyhounds be obedience trained?
Definitely. They respond very well to training, and despite
rumors, greyhounds CAN sit.
- Do
greyhounds need a big yard and lots of room to run?
This is a misconception. Ex-racers have been crated their
entire lives, so they are used to confinement. They require
very little space and make fantastic apartment and condo
dogs. They require only regular walks to maintain good
health and fitness.
- Do
greyhounds eat a lot?
The ex-racer should be fed in accordance with their weight
requirements. After retirement, greyhound usually gain
around 5-7 pounds. Most greyhounds require around two
cups of food per feeding (twice daily). Their diet may
be supplemented with pasta, vegetables, quality canned
dog food, or table scraps.
- Do
greyhounds have special health problems?
Greyhounds are generally very healthy dogs. There are
no diseases that are any more prevalent in this breed
than in any other dog breed. In fact, hip dysplasia, a
common affliction in other larger dogs such as German
shepherds, rottweilers, and golden retrievers, is nonexistent
in greyhounds.
- How
long do greyhounds generally live?
Normal life span for a greyhound is 12-14 years.
- Do
greyhounds shed?
Greyhounds have short coats and shed very little. One
or two light brushings per week make it almost unnoticeable.
- Can
my greyhound do jogging with me?
Greyhounds are sprinters, and unless you plan to run 35-40
miles per hour for about two minute and then quit, you're
going to have to allow them time to work up to it. Yes,
greyhounds can run (on leash!) with you, but will have
to be conditioned for it, just as you conditioned yourself
with longer and longer runs.
