WITH GREAT APPRECIATION
By Carole Oglesbee
From
time to time, the Needle Nose Crew has dedicated an issue of our Needle Nose
Notes to an adopter and/or volunteer who has passed away. This month we are
again dedicating an issue but not to someone who is deceased. However, our beloved web master, Phil Epler,
did give us a major scare during the month of September. Phil conquered some severe heart problems with
a stay in the hospital. He is now home
and busy with extended treatments. He is
in the hands of his loving wife, Toni, and his doctors. So very often we all wait until someone is no
longer with us to extend our thanks for all their volunteer efforts. It’s the right thing to do but somehow seems
just too little too late. So, before any
more time passes, we wanted to let Phil know how very much we appreciate his
help. Phil started as a Hemopet
volunteer in 1996. He quickly graduated
to an adopter and then to a Needle Nose Crew member. Phil and his wonderful feisty little girl,
Alyeska, participated in many NNC events while the Eplers still lived in the
GREEN TEA
By Linda Brown
What a
great herb this tea is! It has so many
benefits - especially for an anticancer preventative/treatment.
Green
Tea contains polyphenols which possess outstanding therapeutic action; antioxidant
and anticancer properties. Green Tea
polyphenols inhibit cancer by blocking the formation of cancer causing
compounds such as nitosmines, suppressing the activation of carcinogens, and
detoxifying or trapping cancer causing agents. This herb has been proven to shrink soft
tissue tumors of all kinds, benign and cancerous.
Green
Tea is a great liver cleanser and stimulates calorie burning. In addition, the polyphenols in green tea may
protect against heart disease by preventing the oxidation of LDL.
For
preventative health, Green Tea is available in tea bags, (steep one bag in
boiling water for two minutes), tablets and capsules. 2 tablets (or capsules) daily for your
greyhound and/or yourself. Dosage will
vary depending on where you purchase it - but the 'standardized' dosage is safe
for everyone. There are no known
'cautions' with green tea with the exception of the caffeine that is in tea. If you are caffeine sensitive - do not drink
or take your tablets/capsules before bedtime. Morning is preferred.
Feel
free to contact me if you want additional information on adding green tea to an
existing herbal anticancer treatment or to start a liver cleanse.

HOLIDAYS ARE ON THE HORIZON
By Joy Moss
Every year we try to remind everyone to make sure your
greyhound’s environment stays safe. With
“Howl”oween quickly approaching, it’s not too soon to start thinking about
people coming and going, visits and parties, shopping and errands for upcoming
holidays.
I have an exercise pen across my front door – I know it’s
not “House Beautiful” – but the dogs can’t bolt out the door when visitors
arrive. Make sure they always wear a
collar with ID tags.
Pets are not garbage disposals for holiday leftovers – don't
upset the season by making your pet ill.
Make sure Halloween candy is put up – out of the reach of the counter
surfers. Chocolate contains theobromine,
which is toxic to many domestic animals, including dogs. Dogs become accustomed to a regular diet and
treating them to excessive fatty holiday leftovers can upset their entire
systems. Stick with their normal diet
and avoid giving them more than a scrap or two. Bones of any kind can be
dangerous to your pet, but particularly splintery turkey bones. Aluminum foil that has been wrapped around
meat and disposable baking pans are very attractive, so be sure to discard them
securely. Alcohol (many dogs like the
taste) is also toxic. Food gifts are
also best kept out of reach. Many a
greyhound has sampled gifts intended for another. They may be sighthounds, but their noses work
pretty well, too.
Keep in mind that many plants such as Holly, Poinsettias,
and Mistletoe used as holiday decorations are toxic if ingested. Keep them out of reach, or use artificial
alternatives.
Christmas tree decorations such as tinsel, glass balls and
popcorn strands can cause serious intestinal complications. Trees have also proven irresistible to many
greyhounds who feel it is their duty to keep the tree “watered” (girls too!), or
just find it convenient to have a tree in the living room. An exercise pen has proven useful in
curtailing this behavior. Once the tree
is positioned and decorated, simply wrap the exercise pen around it as a barricade.
Finally, remember to make time for your greyhound buddy
during this busy season. Greys are
notorious for picking up on our emotions.
With the hustle and bustle of
the holidays, if you become stressed, your pets become stressed, too. Your dog depends on you for
companionship and love. Share the joy of
the season with your pal. Happy Holidays
from all of us at the Needle Nose Crew!

With the end of summer comes the end of daylight
savings. With the end of daylight
savings comes the end of the Needle Nose Crew walks around
For the second year in a row, we have some very active,
dedicated walkers. These walkers aren’t
going to let bad weather and/or darkness get in their way. So there will still be humans and greyhounds
meeting at 6PM on Wednesday evenings for the weekly Walk around the
For those who would rather take their walks during our warm
summer months, the official Needle Nose Crew Wednesday night event will resume
next April. Watch the Needle Nose Notes
and NNC web site for information when we get closer to 2007 Daylight Savings
Time.
