ON WITH A NEW CENTURY By Carole Oglesbee A very Happy New Year to each and every one reading our newsletter. It seems just like yesterday we were ushering in the new century with Needle Nose Crew and here we are starting the second half of our first decade. Time does fly…especially when we keep as busy as the Needle Nose Crew. For those of you who have not brought your greyhounds out to join us at a show, please consider attending during the coming year. It is a great pleasure to talk to others about our greys. Many have never seen greys before and are fascinated by our gentle, sweet creatures. They truly want to hear from the human companions as to what it is like to live with a grey or two. As most of us know from experience, shows are by far one of the best ways to promote greyhound adoption. There is no end to the weekend events you can attend. Last year the Needle Nose Crew spent 66 days letting the world know that we have marvelous companion canines. You could have taken your choice of pet stores as we attended 22 days at four Petsmart locations, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa. If you’d rather, there is our marvelous shopping venue at the Irvine Spectrum where we spent 6 wonderful Sunday afternoons talking to the strolling crowds. We threw in a grand opening of Michaels in Aliso Viejo. For coffee drinkers, we attended Costa Mesa’s local Diedrich’s on 6 Saturday mornings catching the latte lovers. In addition to our regular events, we also pulled out the stops to do special venues which are always well attended by the general public. We showed off our greys at a total of 9 days of Home Show and 3 days of Pet Expo events at the Orange County Fairgrounds. We joined in the fun with the Dana Point Wag-A-Thon, the Laguna Board of Realtors Chili Cook-Off, the Mission Viejo Dawg Pet Faire and the Newport Beach Back Bay Bow Wow Walk. These were all events that assist the sponsoring community’s animal shelters. There are also wonderful community events that are geared to the human citizens. We were pleased once again to participate in the Newport Beach Race for the Cure, the Brea Wellness Festival and the Placentia Heritage Festival. We went into holiday mode by attending 2 evenings of tree lighting at Newport Beach’s Fashion Island and 1 evening at San Juan Capistrano’s town center. In between the two tree lighting events, we headed to Corona Del Mar for a day enjoying the city’s PCH Christmas walk. Although our schedule was extremely busy, we lent our efforts to help Hemopet with their 8 Saturdays of Bubble Baths. These dates are a marvelous opportunity to have your greys groomed and do a little canine and human shopping. We also spent a wonderful Sunday in October lending support to Southern California Greyhound Adoption League at their annual reunion picnic. It was a marvelous event that included not only the NNC but four greyhound adoption organizations. For a promotion group like the NNC, it couldn’t have been better than to watch Homestretch Greyhounds, Retired Racers, Hemopet and SoCalGAL all joining together wanting only the very best for each other’s efforts. These were certainly 66 wonderful days of promoting greyhounds as the marvelous pets we all know they are. There will be just as many days, if not more coming up this year. Be sure to check our newsletters each month for the current month’s schedule. If you lose track of your copy, just double check the events page on our web site at needlenosecrew.org. Wherever you get your information, please do gather your greys and come out and join us in 2006 whenever you can. You will be welcomed and appreciated for your efforts in helping interest the public in greyhound adoption. MY TWO EXTRA SHADOWS By Mark R. Strempek My shadows, I have three. Wherever I go they're with me. One calm, and two moving all about. The best, yet hardest decision I've made, or should I say, made for me. Copperhead is a man’s best friend, even thou he's a ladies man. The lady in our life, Taboo, lives up to her name on a daily basis! She's my "little she Devil" always into anything that doesn’t belong to her, but if asked would tell you it all belongs to her (even my queen size bed). Copperhead takes over the couch whenever I'm not on it. All worth it to have two such Greys adopt me and teach me new things daily. Now shadows, I have three, and so much better for it. I love these gentle, sometimes goofy runners. Dancing, prancing, and jumping about. Tails that wag in a way that you think they'd fall out! Thank you, Betty and the staff at Hemopet, Carole, Joy and another friend Kerene who first introduced me to one and all. I cannot imagine ever having less than three shadows. Happiness is a new stuffie! EVERYONE LOVES MOE TOYS! By Joy Moss Remember back to when you first brought your greyhound home. So many questions... Who was a good greyhound vet? What’s the best food and good treats? Where’s a great place to shop? Well, it was one of my questions! And I can say without a doubt (and my greyhounds agree) that Moe Toys is the best! Some of you know me only as your Needle Nose Crew Editor. Some of you have seen and talked with me at all the numerous Needle Nose Crew shows that Carole schedules to make sure I have no free time! The knowledge that someone I have spoken with at a show has adopted a greyhound is worth the effort. The feeling of being responsible for saving a life is indescribable. That leads to my other volunteer efforts to help ex-racing greyhounds as Program Coordinator of Southern California Greyhound Adoption League. Moe Toys is graciously sponsoring an adoption event for SoCalGAL. Our “Adopt a Sweetheart” show is scheduled for the weekend before Valentine’s Day! Join us on Saturday or Sunday, February 10th and 11th, between 11AM and 4PM at Moe Toys, located at 630 S. Grand Avenue, Suite 115, in Santa Ana. Come meet our foster greyhounds and our wonderful SoCalGAL volunteers. There will be snacks and refreshments... and don’t forget your checkbook! Moe Toys will be giving everyone a discount, with a generous portion going to support our SoCalGAL rescue efforts. If you can’t join us, mark your calendars anyway... Check our website at socalgal.org for upcoming details on how to indicate SoCalGAL for donations for your on-line orders at moetoys.com.
THE ULTIMATE HUMILIATION By Kindra Willey Living on 3 acres far, far out in the country, there are some (not many) minor irritations – such as rabbits and gophers. I have learned that there is something worse than coming home and finding a dead rabbit in my house, namely finding PART of a dead rabbit in my house. So I know that the Greys do, in fact, catch a rabbit now and then. Unfortunately, the operative word is “catch” rather than “chase.” Our Greys are so lazy, I’m pretty sure the rabbit has to hop up and jump into their mouths before the Greys will “catch” it. More and more, John has been complaining that the rabbits run across in front of the Greys, and the Greys pay no attention. But the other day, the ultimate humiliation came his way. John was on his way down the mountain to the gate when I drove up and several of our Greys came running down to meet me. Right in their path, cheerfully eating the grape vines, was a rabbit. One after another, the Greys leaped over the rabbit and continued their race to the gate. The rabbit watched the Greys sail over it, then returned to it’s feast on the grape vines!
