NNC 2004 DONATIONS As is our routine, we let you all know about our donations at the end of each calendar year. To begin our process, we must first pay for our monthly newsletter copying and mailing, our event literature and our event’s entry fees. After we pay our way, we usually are able to donate an average $2000 to various greyhound adoption groups who are in the Southern California area, to those groups who supply greyhounds to the local area, and to community groups who allow us to attend their charitable events. Our total for this past year of 2004 is lower than our normal average…well sort of lower. Specific cash and product donations are lower because of our efforts to support and assist with Retired Racers relocation. By adding Retired Racers’ adopters to our mailing list and supplying updated ID tags to these same adopters, we increased our newsletter expenses by about $100 per month. Don’t get us wrong, we volunteered to assist and are pleased to help out with the group’s relocation. Linda and Larry Brown were a major force in the southland’s greyhound rescue and adoption community for many, many years. The very least we could do is offer whatever help was necessary to ease their transition. Having explained our hidden donation of approximately $1000, it is understandable that our other donations for the year were under our normal average. We came in with donations of $1073. These donations cover products for group sales and raffle prizes and dollars for percentage of sales at group events and reunions. These specific Needle Nose Crew contributions were made to the following groups:
We hope these products and funds assisted each and every group with their efforts to rescue greyhounds and promote their community charitable activities. We would like to thank each and every Needle Nose Crew member who made a contribution and/or purchased a product from us in order to assist with our continuing efforts. We try to say or write thank you with each donation. However, we know that some members’ efforts can be overlooked. Please know this is not intentional. We just get going too fast with too much going on. Your support is greatly welcomed and very much appreciated. Without each of you, we would not be able to succeed. Happy New Year to everyone and here’s to a successful Eleventh Year!!
CYCLES Life is certainly full of various cycles for all of us. The Needle Nose Crew is no exception. Over the past two years, we have seen many changes with our regular show leads. |
|
Leads are those marvelous volunteers who are willing to show up at an event with a tote full of the necessary materials, set everything up, stay for the entire show and then pack everything back up at the end of their event. Now all of this may sound like a big deal, but it really isn’t. It is the NNC’s practice to hold regular events at specific venues every other month for approximately four hours. Given this scheduling, we are talking about six days out of an entire year… not really all that much to help promote our loving greyhounds. As luck and dedication would have it, we suddenly have had several new show leads step forward to help out not only with our previous venues but with new venues we have been fortunate enough to add to our schedule. In order to ease some of the calls all funneling into one person, we decided to introduce you all to these new leads, their show venues and their e-mail addresses. If you would be so kind, please contact one of these wonderful folks if you have questions regarding a particular show. They will be able to help you with the information you need. So without further fanfare… we present our new show leads:
We’re delighted to have these wonderful volunteers step forward in order to help us out. Remember, exact dates for shows will be listed in the Needle Nose Notes each month. In addition, our show schedule is listed up on our web site at needlenosecrew.org. We will still be looking for one more show lead who can handle a Huntington Beach venue. The dates have not yet been firmed up. However, we believe we will be looking at a date in March, May, July, September and November. If any of you are interested please give us a call at 949 552-1373. We can discuss the details and see about setting up a schedule. Oh yes… please come out and join us at our shows. The more volunteers and greys we have, the more attention we draw, the more folks we talk to about greyhounds. Come on out!! SOLVANG GREYHOUND FEST The East Coast has Dewey Beach, and now the West Coast has the Solvang Greyhound Fest! Mark your calendars for the first West Coast Greyhound Gathering, February 25-27, 2005, in the lovely town of Solvang. Along with the greyt venue of picturesque Solvang, there is an impressive schedule of activities throughout the three day event. Events include several walks, a fun run, and blessings of the hounds. There are speakers scheduled to conduct information sessions on various medical issues. Of course, there are raffles and silent auctions. Registration and proceeds of the raffles and auctions will benefit Greyt Legs - a non profit organization that aids various groups with broken leg veterinarian bills. |
|
And there’s shopping, shopping and more greyt shopping! The vendor list is impressive, with several greyhound adoption groups from California and nearby states scheduled to participate.Visit www.solvanggreyhoundfest.org for information about registration and for a list of some hotels and campgrounds. We have heard from quite a few Needle Nose Crew members that they plan on attending. Hope to see you there! Many thanks go to Teri Rogo of Phoenix and her volunteers for spearheading this event! BRIGHT STAR By Peter Mehit In November, one of the community’s bright stars, Morgan LeFay Mehit, passed away at the age of ten. She was gifted with keen intelligence and an ever vigilant desire to remain alpha female. At our home there are three humans, three cats, two dogs... all female. I am the only male. Morgan was successfully thwarted in her bid for household hegemony by Mrs. Mehit after a spectacular struggle. Morgan loved her greenie treats and her walks, which she would celebrate by a ballet of leaping and prancing, all accompanied by the most original singing. Morgan continued her education throughout her life, frequently cocking her head to one side as she tried to assimilate new information. It never actually worked, but she should be credited for trying. She did have an extensive vocabulary: "Outside?", "Walk?", "Time to Eat?" and "Stay". That last word was optional. She was a very loving pup, when she wasn't upset that I went on a business trip or was showing affection to the other beings in the house, especially my wife. She would then give me the cold shoulder for a while. But Morgan was always my dog. We'd lie on her pillow and I'd bat at her ears and she'd reach out and lick me or swat at me with her paw. Those paws hurt when they connect. I want to say that before Morgan came into my life, I was TERRIFIED of dogs. She picked me as her special one, and she was, is and forever will be my dog. Now I love all dogs. I miss Morgan and I'll never forget her. Morgan is survived by her servants, Peter, Lydia, Kalyca and Tayler Mehit; Tabitha, Carmel and Cute Kitty (the cats) and by her totally depressed greyhound friend, Cashew. We will forever love her and hope she is adjusting to her new life dominating heaven. QUIET LITTLE ANGEL By Diana Anderson I first met Curly Sue at Hemopet when she came out of the trailer after the trip from Tucson. When I finally decided to adopt a third greyhound, it only took half a day to decide on Curly Sue. Curly Sue could con you into an ear scratch and a cookie in no time flat. Even though she was a quiet little angel, she didn’t give up easily. Last September, she lost the fight to liver and kidney failure. She has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and has joined Randy and my first greyhound, Evlyn. Curly Sue will be missed by all who knew her sweet spirit.
