SHARING HOLIDAY FOOD

By Linda Brown

The holidays are a time of caring and sharing with our loved ones; including our canine family members.  Here are some tips when you just have to give in to that 'begging face' for people food:

1.  Turkey - turkey is fine, just not too much.  The tryptophan in this meat can slow the heart rate and make your pet lethargic.  Same goes for us humans - it's why we get so sleepy after a big turkey dinner.

2.  Ham - again, not too much.  Ham is hard to digest and high in sodium.  Sodium is hard on the kidneys.

3.  Mashed potatoes, Yams, Sweet potatoes - All good!!  High in potassium and fiber.  However, avoid the butter - too fatty for our canine friends.

4.  Cranberries - good for everybody unless the kidneys are compromised.  This fruit is very good for keeping healthy kidneys healthy.  Compromised kidneys should not be over-worked and cranberries activate the 'flushing' system, thus making weak kidneys work even harder to flush out those toxins.

5.  Pumpkin - Excellent supplement!!  Pumpkin is high in fiber and Omega 6 fatty acids.  It's just plain healthy.  It helps in preventing and stopping diarrhea.  No matter how they beg - avoid the whipping cream!!

6.  Chocolate - No Matter What - No Chocolate!  It is a poison to our pets.  Even though they say milk chocolate is not as harmful as baker's chocolate, you may have the greyhound that has that fatal response to milk chocolate - never take that chance.

Have a Wonderful Holiday Season and the Very Best New Year!!

THE SINGING GREYHOUND

By Kindra Willey

Bubba joined our family from Hemopet by way of Southern California Greyhound Adoption League.  He took a while to settle in, but in a few months, he was happily cockroaching on the couch.  When it’s time (according to him, never mind the clock) for dinner, he stands at the kitchen door and howls.  It’s a series of short howls, woo woo wooooo, rather than the long howls of a roo, but the longer he waits for dinner, the louder the howls become.

One night after I went to bed, I heard him woo woo’ing and thought he might be afraid or hurt, so I got up and went to find him.  He was sound asleep, cockroached on the couch, singing softly to himself as he slept!

Since then, we have often been crooned to sleep by Bubba, the Singing Greyhound.

BEST FRIENDS

By Rex Lawton

Best friends? Hey, I’ve got three,

Each very close, and dear to me;

Not run of the mill friends, you know,

And not the ones you have for show.

No, these friends are really true.

They give their love, that’s what they do.

And always with a smile and a wag,

Never too tired for a game of tag.

They’ll nuzzle and cuddle and dance about,

And smell your breath with a long slender snout.

I’ll never walk alone with them around;

With their love and devotion, I am never down.

In return I give the best I can.

Of course, food and shelter, you understand.

And there is more I’ve learned to share;

Like the couch, my truck, and favorite chair.

Going to bed, now there’s a feat;

Getting there before they finish their treat.

And having dessert is somewhat of a chore;

Whatever I’m having, they always want more.

Best friends? I’ve got three.

On second thought, maybe they have me.

But, they’ve made life a stroll through a valley.

These friends, Lady, Scotty, and Hallie.

WHAT A CHARACTER!

By Joy Moss

When I first fell in love with my big black boy, A.J., I didn’t realize just what a character he was.  His nickname at the Hemopet kennel was “Eeyore”.  Even though A.J. was black, he was so gray that he almost appeared blue.  He had these great big huge pink “Eeyore” ears.  With very little fur, especially on his backside, you could just imagine how a big pink bow would fit on his tail.  A.J. was my cuddle bug – he would curl up next to me on the couch with his head on my chest, gazing up at me with his big bashful “Eeyore” eyes.  Even though A.J. was with me for too short a time, my house is now littered with “Eeyore” mementos to remind me of my special guy!

So now I have Time.  No, not free time, but a crazy greyhound named Time.  Mostly, he reminds people of another Pooh character, Tigger.  The brindle coloring is a clue, and yes, it is almost a daily occurrence to picture him with his tail as a spring, bouncing through the house (and off the walls).

But Time’s true character is “Dennis the Menace” - that lovable boy who is always in trouble.  I’ve been involved in greyhound rescue efforts for more than 10 years now.  I’ve had over 100 fosters through my home, and have helped find innumerable greyhounds homes.  And yet, Time continues to surprise me.  He finds new ways to get into trouble constantly.  And, like Dennis the Menace, you just can’t help but laugh at his antics!!

Do you have a “character”?  Who does your greyhound remind you of, and why?  Has it been the start of a new “collection” such as my Eeyores?  Share your stories and your pictures with us by mail, or email me at greytjoy@cox.net.

2006 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

By Carole Oglesbee

As we begin our events for the 2006 calendar year, you will notice that there are several weekends that are not filled in with an activity.  This usually means that some other event is taking place that the volunteers who keep the Needle Nose Crew running are planning to attend.

Nine Saturdays of the year, the NNC assists with the Hemopet Bubble Bath.  This is not an NNC event, but we are pleased to help by adding to the festive atmosphere of another group’s efforts.  If you are interested in a wash for your grey, just log onto Hemopet.com for all the information you will need to attend, or call 714-891-2022.  Don’t forget to plan on some shopping for yourselves, your greys or a gift for another greyhound lover.  There’s a lot going on and you’re sure to enjoy the day.

During the first three months of 2006, the NNC will have one weekend each month which will be taken up with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society Conference.  This is the event at which our greys are used by veterinarians to identify acupuncture points as they study to pass the IVAS classes.  For our participation, the NNC receives a significant donation from IVAS.  We match the donation and distribute the total to various groups according to their greys’ participation in the event.  The conference only occurs on the West Coast once every three years and the NNC is delighted to have participated twice.  We are very limited to the number of volunteers and greys who can attend, but if you are interested, please step forward.  You can contact Mike Bushnell at 619 469-3170 or e-mail him at DaLizard@ix.netcom.com.  He’ll be glad to fill you in with the dates, times and general procedures for the events.

Meanwhile, we will be working very hard to find new venues and events for the Needle Nose Crew to participate in during 2006.  We will be concentrating on the south Orange County area which is heavily populated and definitely under-represented by greyhound promoters.  Those of you that live in the southern area., please keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities that might be good for us to attend.  Let us know any details you can gather and pass it all onto us at 949 552-1373 or gogreys@juno.com.  We will check into every idea and attend those which work out.  Remember, the more folks we talk with, the more greyhounds find good homes.
