VOLUNTEER GREYS

By Mike Bushnell

I am proud to say that I have been involved with rescuing greyhounds for 18 years.  I am also pleased to be associated with the Needle Nose Crew.

For several years I have known Dr. Kevin May who is a member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). Once every three years the IVAS conducts its basic veterinarian training course in the San Diego area.  This course is held for veterinarians throughout the world and teaches them the art and science of Acupuncture for use in their practices.

I have helped Dr. May by supplying greyhounds to use as models for the Veterinary students to learn the correct location of acupuncture points.  Rest at ease, the greys are NOT stuck with needles.  The students use their fingers as if they were the needle in order to identify the correct points.

The course covers one week per month and is currently scheduled for October 19-23, November 16-20 of 2005, and January 18-22, February 22-26 of 2006.  The final test is scheduled for March 25-26, 2006.  There is a one month break in December due to the holidays.  Our greyhound services are needed for one or two evening sessions, usually at the end of each week of instruction.  The greyhound sessions will last about three to four hours each.

There are two instructors to a group of students and there are approximately 10 groups per session.  We will be supplying between 15 and 20 greys for each session.  Extra greys are needed in case any grey gets tired or nervous during a single session.

The IVAS generously makes a donation to the Needle Nose Crew for the volunteer efforts of our greys.  In addition, the NNC matches the IVAS donation.  The total donation is then distributed to various greyhound adoption groups based on the origins of the participating greyhounds.  Three years ago the NNC sent out $2500 to eight different adoption groups.

If you think you and your greyhound(s) would be interested in participating in one or more sessions, check out the IVAS organization at www.ivas.org and please email me at dalizard@ix.netcom.com.  I will try to answer any questions you may have.  As soon as I get exact dates and times from Dr. May, I will send them out to everyone who has indicated an interest.  Thanks for your time in volunteering for this worthwhile event.

SPREADING THE MESSAGE

By Vickie Bliss

I enjoy getting the newsletter every month.  I live out near Palm Springs so I don't cross paths with Needle Nose folks often.  However, I want to let you know that it was your group that introduced me to greyhounds.

Quite a few years ago I attended a harvest festival in Orange County with some friends and I found the Needle Nose Crew there with some beautiful greyhounds.  I looked into the eyes of those dogs and I was done for.  I was not in the market for a dog at that time but I knew my next one would be a greyhound.  In the interim I read books and on-line materials to be sure that a greyhound was what I really wanted.

Three years ago I adopted the most wonderful greyhound ever from the Greyhound Adoption Center.  Six months later, we adopted a younger brother for him.  They are wonderful dogs.  In the process I became an active volunteer with GAC and continue to try to spread the message that you folks communicated to me.

Thank you for your hard work on behalf of greyhounds.

When Gravity Attacks

By Sharyn Deeringer

We all stand tall,

We love to run,

But when gravity attacks,

You know we’re done.

When gravity attacks,

Give a soft place to fall.

We have beds all over,

Against every wall.

When gravity attacks,

On our sides we will land,

Just rub our bellies,

With any free hand.

We may even cockroach,

As we roll on our backs.

Just give us a rub,

When gravity attacks.

THERE IS A RIGHT WAY...

By Kindra Willey

Ellen is a very small black girl (at 50 pounds, she’s the equivalent of a Whippet and a half).  When she came to us from Southern California Greyhound Adoption League, she was a spook with her tail constantly tucked under her tummy.  We were determined to put some weight on her (we still are, but so far, we’re not gaining much ground).

Each evening, Ellen is called into the kitchen for a can of dog food in addition to the kibble she eats during the day.  No matter where she is when she’s called, she goes back to her bed in the office and waits there.  Once she gets there, John has to stand in exactly the right place outside the kitchen and call her.  She then comes dancing down the hall, tail waving over her back, into the kitchen.

Ellen will wait patiently in her bed until the nightly ritual is followed the right way – and it took her only a few weeks to get us correctly trained!

TEA TREE OIL

By Linda Brown

This little jewel has more benefits than you can imagine.  I use Tea Tree Oil for so many things and it has never failed me.

This natural medicine is for EXTERNAL use only.  It is NEVER to be ingested.  Tea Tree Oil is a strong antiseptic/anti-fungal/anti-itch.  It is included in dozens of over the counter pet care products:  Shampoos, wound care (cream and spray), and skin care.  You can also purchase a small bottle of 100% pure TTO almost anywhere.  I always have a bottle on hand for the following:

  1. To apply directly on those skin lesions that look like zits that our greyhounds are so famous for.  2-3 times daily - with a Q-tip - and the lesions should be gone within 3 days.

  2. Any small wound, even a puncture, can be safely cleaned and will promote rapid healing.  I recommend the wound spray for this as the pure TTO may sting a bit.

  3. If your pet has stitches, spray or dab TTO directly to the stitches twice a day.  You will be amazed how fast that wound heals and the TTO will avoid all that 'itching' that comes with the healing process.

  4. Heals hot spots so fast!  Apply spray directly on affected area(s) 2-3 times daily.

  5.  Any toe nail problems caused by bacteria or fungus.

For us humans - all the same applies - acne, wounds, insect bites and anything fungal or bacterial.  Example - toe nail fungus - FDA approves Lamisil (a drug with side affects).  I approve Tea Tree Oil.  Use the 100% pure and saturate the affected nails twice daily until cleared up.  It works great!!

FALL PICNICS?  YOU BET!!

The spring and early summer passed with reunion picnics being held by Greyhounds2Go and Operation Greyhound in the San Diego area and Greyhound Pets of America in the Los Angeles area.  Now we pass into fall with three more reunions taking place.

We start with Greyhound Connection holding their event on the Sunday of Greyhound Planet Week, September 18th.  The reunion will take place at Felicita Park in Escondido.  Please check out the details by logging onto greyhoundconnection.org.

The second fall event will be held by the Greyhound Adoption Center.  Woofstock will once again be held at the group’s Canine Sports Center in El Cajon on Saturday, October 1st.  The group will have details on their web site at greyhoundog.org.

Finally, Southern California Greyhound Adoption League will be holding their third annual event on Sunday, October 2nd.  They will be changing their reunion venue from Irvine up to Long Beach’s El Dorado Park.  This year’s event will include Hemopet and Retired Racers as sponsors and participants.  Everyone is looking forward to Larry and Linda Brown, founders of Retired Racers, making a long awaited visit to the local area and joining the fun.  For more information and details, please log onto socalgal.org.

We hope you all will make it a point to attend one or more of the listed picnics.  You will enjoy good fellowship, food, sunshine and goodies to purchase.  Oh Yes, and lots of greyhounds to hug!!
