B-L SOLUTION aka BUTELESS By Linda Brown This is a greyt, convenient way to give your pet a safe, natural anti-inflammatory. It was originally formulated for racehorses with related racing injuries, such as pulled muscles, and then later on for arthritis. It has been found to be very successful for canines suffering with the same afflictions. B-L Solution is the perfect combination of vitamin B-12 and the herbs Devil's Claw and Yucca. Both herbs are the natural derivatives for aspirin without the side affects. B-L Solution can be purchased at most Petsmart stores with Equine sections, and at Feed Stores carrying Equine products. One teaspoon twice a day, mixed in their meals, is all you need to control the pain of arthritis, muscle soreness or any related discomforts. Most pets, including my horses, love the taste. As is the norm, because it is an herbal medicine, you will not see immediate results. Give the solution at least three to four days to take affect. ADDENDUM... By Cheryl Truss-Cook I remember that ride that Linda Brown and I took to Alameda East in Denver (as seen on Animal Planet) together with my 2 greys, Kali (my Hemopet girl) and Freckles (from Retired Racers). It was exciting and eye-opening. I set the appointment before arriving at Retired Racers' new facility in Trinidad, CO and Linda graciously accompanied us. I was worried that Kal and Freck may have some grave bone issues. Freckles had a persistent back right leg limp and Kali would lose strength and fall back on both rear legs. Dr. Stubbs is their orthopedic specialist. THE man! The first line of defense was x-rays. Very telling – it turned out that Freckles has a perfectly aligned skeleton. Dr. Stubbs said it was remarkable, given his heavily successful racing career. So, in Freck's case, it was just a matter of sore muscles. Kali was a different story altogether. She had a pelvic anomaly. The bones leading out left and right to her rear legs were different lengths, which made her wobbly left to right. And a couple of rear vertebrae were fused. What a difference an x-ray makes! Well, you know the rest of the story from reading Linda's “Medicine Alert” article in last month’s Needle Nose Notes. But I wish to complete the story for the happy ending. As neither situation was serious, but just uncomfortable for my pups, Linda suggested B-L solution. I prefer natural methods to drugs if at all possible. Wow! What a change! I put just half a capful of B-L solution, available in tack/equine stores, in Freck and Kali's morning meal and neither of them have skipped a beat since. They run, play, jump and get into more trouble than I care to mention and there is no trace of soreness. And no limping! Thanks, Linda! Note from your Editor... The Needle Nose Crew would like to remind everyone that it is your responsibility to check with your veterinarian regarding any new treatments or medications.

WHAT DOG ARE YOU? Thanks to Katie Fisher for spotting this funny site featured on “Good Morning America”. Go to http://www.gone2thedogs.com and click on the What Dog Are You link on the right side of the screen. Katie said she thinks it may have a problem because no matter how many times she tried it she was never a Greyhound, and always ended up being a Spaniel of some sort! Carole Oglesbee wound up as a dog she had never even heard of... how bizarre! And your lucky editor was named an Italian Greyhound! (Well, I must admit I did stretch the truth a bit!) READING MATERIALS For several years now, the Needle Nose Crew has recommended four books that will help potential and current adopters locate many of the answers they need to find happiness and peace with their new greyhounds. When someone is just getting started with the adoption process, we suggest Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Brannigan. If these adopters are planning to add human children to their families or already have children, we urge them to purchase Child-Proofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommons. Once a greyhound is adopted, we highly recommend that the new family upgrade their library by adding Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood. Although there is much the same information in both the Adopting and Dummies books, the second has more detail and is an excellent resource book for future use. The final book we recommend is How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days by Shirlee Kalstone. Needless to say, this last publication is for those adopters who are having housebreaking problems with their new additions. There are items in each of these books that we might not all agree with. However, over the years, we have found these four books to be some of the best for those individuals and families who are bringing a greyhound into their homes for the first time. Although they can be found at commercial bookstores and at web sites, we recommend that these books be purchased through the Needle Nose Crew and/or your adoption organizations. The non-profit groups who are working so very hard to find homes for greyhounds deserve to have everyone’s financial support. Purchasing these books is just one way to help out. New adopters are eager to learn about their new family additions and purchasing and reading materials to help everyone settle in is logical to almost everyone. However, unforeseen troubles seem to come up when a greyhound has been in a home for sometime and suddenly problems begin to arise. These “new” problems can be caused by all sorts of reasons…change in time, school starting or letting out, another new pet, remodeling, etc. The list is endless and includes tiny changes that no one ever thinks about or major changes that are quite obvious. All adoption and support organizations are here to help adopters both new and old. However, we would like to encourage each of you to pick up the books you relegated to the bookshelf and reread them for the particular problems you are encountering. If for some reason, you have had greyhounds for sometime but have not purchased books, make it a point to pick up copies and read through them now |

It is better to review help information before you might need it rather than when you are in the middle of a problem and upset. Help out your group; help out your greys; help out yourselves. Have some good solid information at hand to help your household through any trouble spots that might arise. You and your greyhound will be much better off for the preparation. SCHEDULING UPDATES As things will happen we have to announce some scheduling updates for the spring. First, we are sorry to announce to all you Retired Racers folks out there that Linda Brown will not be having a reunion in the Los Angeles area May 22nd. Unfortunately, logistics just didn’t work out for a spring date. However, please keep the weekend of October 1st and 2nd available if at all possible. Linda will be visiting our area at that time. We have already set up venues for that Saturday and Sunday. This will give everyone a choice of dates and locations to visit with Linda. Of course, if you would like, you can visit with her at both events. The Sunday event is still being set up. Once everything is in place we will announce the specifics in plenty of time to make your plans. For all of you planning on attending the America’s Family Pet Expo on Friday, April 15th, please note the new hours. The Expo will be open from 1:00PM to 9:00PM. The Needle Nose Crew booth will be set up and fully staffed. So, stop by and say hello to our volunteers if you visit on Friday. By the time all of you receive this issue of the Needle Nose Notes, we will be in full swing with our Wednesday Walk Around the Lake event. Remember we meet at 6PM at Lake and Barranca in the Coco’s parking in Irvine. Our walks begin the Wednesday after the start of daylight savings and end the Wednesday before the end of daylight savings. This gives six months to enjoy Mother Nature, our greys and each others company in a relaxed and fun manner. See everyone who can make it on Wednesdays. Remember if you have any doubts about NNC events just log onto our web site at needlenosecrew.org. Dates are updated quickly for your information and additional information has been added to each event for your convenience. Please come out with your greys and join in our events. It’s a great way to promote our wonderful companions
