Needle
Nose Crew (NNC), a Greyhound adoption information organization, began as
a grass roots volunteer group in 1994.
The mission of the Needle Nose Crew is to assist Greyhound
adoption and rescue agencies in the placement of ex-racing Greyhounds in
loving homes through public awareness programs, shows, special events,
and advertising.
As
such, Needle Nose Crew offers the prospective adoption “parent” a
list of adoption agencies, information particular to the breed and
retired racers, as well as an opportunity to meet the Greyhounds “up
close and personal”.
NNC volunteers offer anecdotal accounts of life with their
Greyhounds and offer support through past experience and published
resources.
NNC
is strictly volunteer and welcomes anyone who is dedicated to the
welfare of these rescued racers and their ultimate match with loving,
devoted homes and families. |

A
DECADE OF GREYHOUNDS!
Ten
years ago this month, a small group of people gathered together at the
home of one of the group for a barbeque, some socialization and to form
a greyhound organization. And
thus The Needle Nose Crew began. None
of us attending that small gathering could possibly have guessed at all
the incredible things that would happen to so many of us as the next ten
years passed by. Lasting
friendships would be made, group alliances would be formed, and
multitudes of ideas would be born and refined as the weeks, months and
years went on.
The
main focus of the NNC was, and still is, to promote the adoption of
greyhounds and encourage potential adopters to contact the adoption
group and/or groups that are best suited to their individual and family
needs.
The
volunteers of the newly formed NNC started by hoping to schedule an
event once a month; to publish a newsletter two to four times a year;
and hold a fundraising event at least once or twice a year.
It’s absolutely amazing how hopes and dreams can blossom and
grow as people share their ideas and start to work together.
It wasn’t long into the group’s existence that the schedule
of events became weekly affairs. The
newsletter shrank in size to a single sheet, but was being published on
a monthly basis. Fundraising
efforts became a way of life with every event sponsored and each affair
attended.
When
the Needle Nose Crew started out in October of 1994, there were only
four greyhound rescue and adoption organizations groups in all of
As
the eleventh group in the southland, the NNC members are pleased to
volunteer their time and efforts in encouraging people to consider
greyhounds as pets, and promoting the local greyhound groups to
potential adopters. |

ON
TO THE FUTURE!
Thanks
to the Needle Nose Crew’s wonderful webmaster, Phil Epler, we have
slowly progressed to a point where we depend on our web site.
Our members can be informed of our current and future events.
Members can also post pictures of their own wonderful greyhounds.
Potential adopters can find listings for the
Due
to hectic schedules, our site has been very static over the past few
years. We have decided the
time has come for us to improve and expand the information and help that
is offered. So, over
the next three to six months we will be in a constant mode of editing,
adding and, we hope, improving the NNC site.
Our
Coming Events section will add addresses, and maps to show
locations. We hope this will
make it easier for everyone to find our shows and encourage more
volunteers to join in with our greyhound promotion events.
The
Greyt Links section changes are already underway with the
addition of maps to direct potential adopters to greyhound rescue groups
closest to their location. There
will also be a section added which will reflect the same things we tell
folks when they first call for information about greyhound rescue and
“how it works”. This new
section will encourage those who are interested in adopting to contact
adoption groups for information on how each individual group operates,
what greys might be available, and how they can participate in
activities. The Greyt Art section will be removed. We still offer the small David French prints which can be purchased at main NNC events. However, we have found that moving the larger prints around from one show to another is not the best idea for the well-being of each print. We encourage you to attend one of our larger shows in order to purchase a smaller print. If you are interested in a large print, please feel free to contact GreytArt.com. These wonderful people carry a full line of the French Prints. Although the Greyt Gallery has been in existence for some time now, many of you have either not known about it or have not gotten around to sending our webmaster pictures of your greys. We encourage you to participate with pictures of your own wonderful hounds. Remember, those who are looking to adopt enjoy seeing pictures of and reading stories from those who have already adopted a grey. They want reassurance that adopting is a good thing to do. Others singing the praises of their own greys is often just what is needed.
We
will, of course, continue to add our Needle Nose Notes each month.
Past issues are on the web site for everyone to look through for
articles that will give them information concerning their own greyhound
needs. In addition, these
past issues again help potential adopters see the wonders and joys of
having a greyhound join their own family. |

Last but not least, we will be adding a new page to our site. This addition will be a referral page. Many phone calls are made and answered giving out information about reading materials, local veterinarians, pet sitters and/or kennels, obedience trainers, alternative health care providers, etc. Needless to say, this is the web section that will take the longest to get set up and running. Those of us deeply involved with the activities of the NNC certainly have our own recommendations to make and will use those referrals to get started with this page. However, we ask that each of you send over your own recommendations. We will not put any providers or services on our web site unless they come with glowing praises from our own volunteers.
This
is not a page for commercial endeavors to advertise.
It will be by and for our volunteers and potential adopters to use as a
tool. So if you have someone
you’d like to see added to this page, please send the information over
to gogreys@juno.com.
We’ll investigate all referrals and add them as quickly as time
allows… in between events, newsletters and our own schedules.
Many thanks again to Phil Epler for his wonderful work on our web site. Also, thanks to Joy Moss who edits and issues our monthly newsletter. Time and time again, we hear about those who have used our web site and received our newsletter. They are delighted to have information about greyhounds and often pass on our website address and/or newsletter copies to those they meet who are interested in adopting a greyhound. We hope that you all will step up and contribute time at events, web site pictures, referral information, and articles and pictures for our newsletter. After 10 years, we know that what we do works… greyhounds are adopted by meeting and talking with Needle Nose Crew volunteers. Let’s plan to enjoy the next 10 years!
